Warming up with Incredibox gave me a lot of ideas for how this kind of program could be used as a tool for teaching composition and improvisation without needing to worry about notation or instrumental skill, as well as being a great ice breaker for students.

I appreciate the way that you went about structuring the social media aspect of today's class in terms of Personal Learning Networks. Though this is an intuitive idea it is helpful to reframe my thinking of social media and online media in this way.

I think because of my background with social media, I've struggled to use it as something that is not necessarily connected to my personal life - ie, being able to be on twitter or use an RSS reader without feeling like it is an intrusion of my professional life into my personal life. I have been on facebook since 2004 and used livejournal before then. Over the years social media has transitioned from being a space used only by my peer group for relatively frivolous purposes into, effectively, being something between an extension of the workplace and a public performance. I have thought for some time that I need to possibly change my facebook or create accounts that are specifically professional as a music educator, since there is a demand for this among my students and colleagues. It is helpful to see this presentation as a model for how social media can be used professionally rather than for identity development.

Learning about choices in notation software was very helpful and is something I can directly use and will help my teaching a lot. I still write out many things by hand because I find Finale cumbersome and don't have access to it on my main computer, these other options help a lot and are easier to use.

  1. Social media is definitely a mixed bag. For those who choose to use, often they'll have separate professional and personal accounts. Perhaps that would be an option for you?

Glad that the time we spent on notation software was helpful to you. I think both MuseScore and Noteflight can fill a lot of the notational needs of many music teachers and their students.

I look forward to getting to know you further over the next few days!
